BUY IT, LEASE TO OWN IT, OR RENT IT... Furnished or not. The well-preserved J.W. Cook house is a superb example of the free classic variant of the Queen Anne
architectural style. Built in 1905, it is also the oldest and only brick farmhouse remaining in the Lincoln Park
addition; and one of five pre-1910 brick farmhouses in Spokane County. This home is listed in the Spokane
Register of Historic Places and has been in the same family since 1967. The home was designed and built by
John W. Cook who was a meticulous craftsman and bricklayer. He was a supervisor in charge of bricklayers for
Frederick Phair, a prominent early Spokane contractor. Phair built the original Paulsen building, the Masonic
temple, the Spokane City Club, the Spokane Athletic Club, Y.M.C.A, the Spokane Dry Goods Company building,
etc., with his last work being the construction of the St. John Cathedral. This is the only home in Spokane County
that features a unique application of decorative stucco that simulates brick veneer.
In 1999, an extensive restoration and remodeling project was undertaken using photographs up to 1960
and employing a historical consultant for research. The porch was restored to replicate the original Tuscan
columns, railing, and balustrades. A one-story addition, approximately 420 sq ft was added to the South end
of the home. This addition features a bellcast hipped roof with dormers and flared eves that match the home’s
original circa-1905 roof design. It is clad in red brick and surrounded by multipaned windows, fir wood floors
and a marble gas fireplace with built-ins. All woodwork was custom milled to match the original woodwork.
Included in the surfeit of work is all tongue-and-groove fir floors throughout the main floor, window
seats, reproductions of original cabinetry in the kitchen, restoration of old doors and fixtures and keeping much
of the original woodwork and original pocket doors. Formal dining and living plus library. Kitchen and laundry
on the main floor, a powder room, and an additional full bathroom. The second floor of the home houses three
bedrooms and two bathrooms. Some of the attic area was converted to include a full bath in the first bedroom.
Over the course of the years of remodeling a new roof was installed, new wiring, and new plumbing. The
basement has been all painted, including the concrete floors. You will find a tasting room, a powder
bath, a recreational room, and a storage area.
Carefully crafted and designed oversized three-car garage that was built in 1999 and is 1196 sq feet.
Above it is an amazing studio apartment with a small kitchenette, a shower bath, and lots of room for dining,
living, and bedroom. A small bridge from the back door walks you over to the land behind.
The home has a generator for the new addition including the studio apartment. There is surround sound in the new addition as well.
The Barn which is on the westside of the property was built in 2000 and is comprised of some concrete
flooring, its own power, two stalls, a tack room, and a large loft. There is an original old stone outbuilding that can be a she-shed and a hand-dug well on the property. Public water and sewer on the property.
The property sits on nearly nine acres and has fencing, cross fencing, and enclosed large pastures for
horses and/or other farm animals.
This home is for sale for $1,595,000.00.
