Her children walked to Hutton Elementary, played endless games of basketball at Hutton, explored Manito Park and spent hours in the backyard. Winter meant sledding at Manito; summers meant neighborhood adventures. Later, Lewis and Clark High School was close by—another reason the family felt fortunate to call this special part of Spokane home.
But the magic of this house has always been its ability to bring people together.
Thanksgiving and Christmas were traditions here. Carrie, a wonderful cook, prepared unforgettable feasts and set the formal table with china and sterling. Family gathered, stories flowed and everyone lingered long after the meal was finished. One memorable Christmas brought 20 family members together for a white Christmas. Then Carrie appeared as an elf, descending the open staircase to surprise the younger grandchildren-a moment that became part of the family lore.
And then, we can't forget...Halloween.
The house became a neighborhood destination, complete with Carrie’s dogs dressed in costume and enough candy to satisfy a small army of trick-or-treaters. At times, nearly 100 children came to the door. When the final ghost, witch or superhero headed home, the evening wasn't over. Family and grandchildren returned from trick-or-treating throughout the neighborhood to gather inside for warm soup and more memories.
Birthdays were celebrated here. Friends gathered for happy hour. Holiday parties filled the rooms. Children played freely in the yard. Wonderful neighbors and the peaceful, safe character of the neighborhood made it a place where kids could simply be kids—and where adults could enjoy the rare pleasure of knowing their children were right at home.
And what a setting.
Located in the highly desirable Hutton School District and within walking distance of Manito Park, the home is nestled in Spokane’s distinguished Rockwood Historic District which was designed by the renowned Olmsted Brothers of Brookline, Massachusetts.
